Silent yet Impactful: Kolkata Police's ‘Safe Drive Safe Life’ Initiative at National Library Crossing

Kolkata  – The Bhawanipur Traffic Guard of Kolkata Police organized a special session under the Safe Drive Safe Life initiative at National Library Crossing, promoting road safety awareness among students and the community. The event saw participation from students of Mitra Institution and other schools, reinforcing a collective commitment to safer roads.

As part of the initiative, students from Mitra Institution performed a street drama highlighting the dangers of road traffic injuries and the importance of adhering to traffic rules.

A young participant, Master Sourjyo Roy, a Class VII student from Mitra Institution, shared his excitement, saying, "I was so happy to get a brand-new helmet! Now I will tell my friends to always wear one and follow traffic rules so that no one gets hurt. Thank you, Police Uncle, for teaching us about road safety, and a big thanks to my Snigdha Ma’am for giving me this opportunity to attend this program!"

Recognizing the importance of road safety at the community level, Kolkata Police distributed helmets to the fathers of students who regularly commute to school on two-wheelers. This initiative aimed to promote responsible riding habits and ensure better protection for daily commuters.

Sergeant Biplab Mondal from Bhawanipur Traffic Guard informed that this year’s campaign was conducted in a silent manner due to the ongoing Madhyamik examinations. He emphasized that despite the absence of loud messages, the impact remained strong, ensuring students grasped the importance of road safety through engaging activities like the street drama.

Senior officers from Kolkata Police, along with teachers from Mitra Institution and other participating schools, attended the event to encourage and support the initiative.

India records approximately 178,000 road accident deaths annually, with nearly 60 percent of fatalities occurring in the 18–34 age group. West Bengal recorded 13,686 crashes and 6,002 deaths, ranking 11th nationwide in both categories. Uttar Pradesh reported the highest number of road traffic injuries, with 23,652 cases.

With road fatalities on the rise, initiatives like Safe Drive Safe Life serve as crucial reminders of the need for responsible driving and pedestrian safety. Kolkata Police remains committed to fostering awareness and ensuring safer roads for all.

This initiative is another step toward making Kolkata a child-friendly city, with Kolkata Police playing a key role in ensuring safer streets and a secure environment for future generations.
