Kolkata : A grand Shri Krishna Janmashtami celebration was organised at Shree Shyam Mandir, Alambazar, on September 4, 2026, with great devotion and enthusiasm. The programme began at 5 pm and witnessed the participation of a large number of devotees. Decorated with flowers and colourful lights, the temple premises echoed with chants and devotional slogans in praise of Lord Krishna and Baba Shyam throughout the evening.

Popularly known among devotees as “Kolkata’s Khatu Dham,” the temple is counted among the prominent Khatu Shyam temples in Eastern India.

The Janmashtami celebrations began in a deeply devotional atmosphere, followed by a special bhajan sandhya. Renowned bhajan singers Nishant Rajliwal, Rahul Rajliwal, Anurag Dadhich and Arpit Srivastava presented devotional bhajans dedicated to Lord Krishna and Baba Shyam.

The soulful performances left devotees immersed in devotion, with many seen singing and swaying to the bhajans. The temple premises reverberated with applause, devotional songs and chants, creating an atmosphere of spiritual fervour.

Dance Drama Depicting Krishna’s Leelas Captivates Devotees: A special dance drama presented by Bittu Singh Rajput was another major attraction of the celebration. The performance portrayed various episodes from the life of Lord Krishna, including his birth, childhood leelas, butter-stealing episodes and Raas Leela.

The artistes’ performance was widely appreciated by the devotees and kept the audience engaged throughout the programme.

Shri Krishna Janmotsav Celebrated at Midnight: The main religious ceremony of the Janmashtami celebration was held at midnight. At 12 midnight on September 5, Lord Krishna’s birth was ceremonially celebrated, amid devotional chants and greetings from devotees.

The midnight celebration was followed by a grand Maha Aarti, in which a large number of devotees participated and offered prayers to Lord Krishna and Baba Shyam.

After the Maha Aarti, Mahaprasad was distributed among the devotees. Devotees continued to visit the temple premises late into the night, bringing the Janmashtami celebrations to a devotional conclusion.
