Barasat : Narayana Hospital Barasat successfully performed a Laparoscopic closed pericystectomy with non-anatomical liver resection on a West Bengal based 68-year-old male farmer suffering from Hydatid disease of liver.
Hydatid disease is a parasitic infection caused by a certain kind of tapeworm. It can cause cysts to grow in the liver and other organs. Tapeworms usually live in hosts such as sheep and dogs. The infection is common in rural, underdeveloped areas where people raise livestock. Humans can get the disease if they accidentally eat or drink anything infected with the parasite.
Dr. Pranoy Gupta, Consultant, Minimal Access GI Surgeon at Narayana Hospital, Barasat, led the team. This intricate procedure addressed an extremely rare and complex medical case.

It is especially common among people who raise sheep or other livestock and also have stray dogs. The 68-year-old patient suffering from Hydatid has a history of keeping stray dogs as pets, raising suspicion for zoonotic infections. So, we decided to go for Laparoscopic closed pericystectomy with non-anatomical liver resection. This approach offers several advantages, including improved cosmesis, reduced pain, minimal blood loss, faster recovery, and lower risk of post-operative hernias.”
Despite difficulties like patient’s age and health condition, Dr. Pranoy Gupta and his team took this challenging case and decided for a Laparoscopic closed pericystectomy with non-anatomical liver resection.
The patient had an uneventful day and was discharged within 5 days. Patient is now able to perform all his routine occupational and personal activities comfortably.
