Tobacco use remains one of the most significant global public health challenges, leading to devastating consequences for both individuals and communities. There are several behavioural and environmental factors which are associated with the risk of developing cancer, such as – tobacco use, alcohol use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, obesity, infections, air pollution, but consumption of tobacco is the primary and the deadliest factor among these.
Over 1.35 million deaths are linked to tobacco consumption in India. 27% of the country’s cancer burden is attributed to tobacco related cancers and 86% of lung cancers are caused due to tobacco consumption. In West Bengal, 70,000 cases of cancer are detected every year in the state in which lung cancer is the most prevalent among men and cervical cancer among women.
Talking about the importance of world no tobacco day and its impact, Dr. Akhter Jawade, Director-East, Karkinos Healthcare Pvt. Ltd. said, “Today, tobacco consumption has become a fashion, mainly among the youth. The addiction to tobacco has been a nightmare in modern times and is increasing at an alarming rate. Tobacco usage, both chewing and smoking, leads to a high incidence of oral cancer and other illnesses. Many patients are operated on major oral cancers due to tobacco that leads to huge mental trauma and financial loss and face big setbacks in their lives and the survival rates are also low in these cases. Prevention is better than cure, so we at Karkinos Healthcare feel that as citizens of the country it is our responsibility to encourage users to refrain from tobacco consumption. It is equally important to create awareness about good health and the overall well-being of society. Let’s come together and Say No to Tobacco.”
The session featured renowned experts in the field, who shared the latest research findings and evidence-based strategies for quitting tobacco. Through interactive discussions and practical tips on quitting tobacco, the seminar offered a supportive environment to encourage individuals towards positive changes in their lives by embracing a tobacco-free lifestyle.
