Indian sportsperson will get number of medals in Tokyo Olympics hopes Dipa Karmakar

 Ace gymnast of the country and Rio Olympics sensation Smt. Dipa Karmakar has full faith on the present Indian contingent representing the country in the Tokyo Olympics and expressed hope that they will clinch quite a number of medals in various events and glorify the country. She was addressing a webinar organized by Regional Outreach Bureau, Kolkata and Field Outreach Bureau, Chuchura, of Information & Broadcasting Ministry on the topic- India in Tokyo Olympic today. Though Dipa is not participating in this year’s Olympic due to her injury but her wishes will always be with the Indian sports persons and she is hopeful that gymnast Pranati Nayek will succeed in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. Pranati, the only gymnast representing the country in this year's Olympics, is from Pingla in West Bengal's Paschim Medinipur district. There is every chance to win medals from Badminton, shooting, archery, weight lifting and boxing opined Dipa Karmakar. On a question related to grooming of a sports person to compete at the highest level of competition she said that the parents and the schools had to play a major role in this endeavor and as she belongs to Tripura so she can say that there is no dearth of talent in her state. Apart from Smt.Dipa Karmakar webinar was attended by another Olympian Smt. Dola Banerjee and eminent sports journalist Shri Rupak Saha.

An eminent archer of the country and two times Olympian who also participated in more than 50 competitions spanning over 20 years of her international sports career Smt. Dola Banerjee said that Deepika Kumar has quite a fair chance of winning medals in this year’s Olympic. “Deepika got three gold medals in the last world cup, which may act as a booster to enhance her confidence level”. Husband wife duo Atanu Das and Deepika Kumar has also good chance in the mixed category she opined. But at the same time she said that all the participants want to give her best in their respective events but various unforeseen factors including luck factor plays a vital role in their performance. She said that the participants now have world class equipment which was not so easily accessible during the time when they represented the country. Replying to question on grooming of sportsperson to compete in the highest level she also stressed on the need to search and catch the players at the very young age and coach them to achieve success.

At the beginning of the webinar Eminent sports journalist Shri Rupak Saha gave a wonderful picture of Olympic and described why it is called a the greatest show on earth. He shared his experience of covering numbers of Olympic during his career as a sports journalist and said that Government’s Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) is a wonderful programme to help the athletes. TOPS is a flagship program of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports which is an attempt to provide assistance to India’s top athletes. The Scheme looks to add a premium to the preparations of these athletes so that they can win Olympic medals in 2020 and 2024 Olympics. Shri Saha said that the idea of the scheme is to also keep an eye in the future medal prospects for the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024 and Los Angeles Games in 2028. He hoped that the Indian contingent may win quiet a number of medals in mat sports and target sports.
