Ananya Bhanja Chaudhuri directed ‘Lorai’ is a short film with a strong social message. It stars Neel Bhattacharya, Tathagata Chaudhuri, Amrita Mallick and others in pivotal roles.
The story revolves around Nandini, a lady with rare qualities of beauty with brains. She is engrossed in her own world singing a song of Ratkarabi to her friends over a video call. Her husband Raj is on the other hand a corporate guy trying to concentrate in his work from home mode in this lockdown phase.Their utopian world crumbles as they encounter four people respectively. First, the elder brother of Nandini who sells fruits in his locality to feed his family. Then they encounter Sabjiwala, Malati Masi’s son and finally Jahangir da, a housekeeper.
Both realise they are helpless in front of this widely spreading pandemic driven situation. Will Nandini fight back? Do we see Raj to support her or not? What is the path ahead?
“I was feeling helpless to watch the severe condition of people around me in news channels and dailies. I felt the urge to do something. I wanted to raise awareness. And as an art practitioner making the film came as a first option to me. The core message of this film is to give a glimpse of the present situation and motivate people to come out of their comfort zone to lend their hands in helping the needy by donating relief materials,” said the director while speaking about the short.
‘Lorai’ will be streaming soon on YouTube channel of CineShorts Premiere. While the story, script, screenplay and direction are by Ananya Bhanja Chaudhuri, editing, colour grading, sound engineering and designing are by Sayantan Adhikary. The background score has been composed by Naba Kumar Adhikary.
